In the heart of the holiday:

Down and mountain

Ukrainian word,

That is always with me.

Bee loves a flower,
< p> Trembitar - trembita.

My Ukrainian world,

You - from the alphabet!

The world that began with the alphabet

… Constantine drew letters on the earth with a thin stick, and Methodius brought them out, trying to make them clear and beautiful, although he was primarily a warrior, not a calligrapher. Then he erased the letters and wrote from memory. During the day, learning wisdom from the ancestor of the human race - the earth, Methodius studied the signs of the Slavic alphabet. This is how a miracle was born, whose name is the famous Cyrillic alphabet! More than eleven centuries ago, the Thessalonian brothers-educators Constantine (in the monks - Cyril) and Methodius brought to the land of the Slavs the light of writing and knowledge. Having created an alphabet different from the Latin "alphabet", they diligently taught their students literacy and church service in the Slavic language. The most able were Gorazd, Kliment, Lavrentiy, Angelariy, Naum and Slavomir, who brought the science of great teachers to the people. "It was a wonderful moment! The deaf began to hear, and the dumb became famous, because until now the Slavs seemed to be deaf and dumb, ”the chroniclers wrote about that service of God. This is how their native language resonated in people's souls.

The graphics of modern Ukrainian orthography originate from the Old Slavic Cyrillic alphabet. There are even two letters in our modern alphabet that were not in the Cyril and Methodius alphabet. This "g" - which is known since the end of the twelfth century. and became widespread in the XVI century., and "yi", which took over the functions and + and. The rest of the letters, according to Professor Ivan Ogienko, ancestors already knew in ancient Kiev times, at least from the VII century. AD, ie before the Baptism of Ukraine-Russia by Prince Vladimir the Great. Here is such an invaluable wealth we inherited from glorious ancestors. Through the centuries and millennia we have echoes of the Slavic liturgy of Cyril and Methodius. He also came to my “Abomovny.”

This book was conceived as an alphabet in names for children - thirty-three cranes in the sunny sky of childhood. Why exactly thirty-three birds in this vein? Thirty-three letters in the Ukrainian alphabet. Until recently, there were thirty-two, one crane - the letter Ґ - in the cold, hungry year of 1933 was abused by the then authorities and lived in exile. Now the Ukrainian sun, the fiery Ukrainian heart with the beginning of the national and spiritual revival, has warmed up the swan, but living chick, which returned to us from the vortex together with the cranberry "kru-kru" by Bohdan Lepky. trying the alphabet in the form of patter, stumbling blocks, counters, teasers, rainbows and fiction. Vladimir Yakubovsky, an artist and laureate of the Ivanna Blazhkevych Literary and Artistic Prize, followed my example. For our children are cheerful, carefree, meticulous, clever and derisive. They know how to show off, show themselves and make fun of even adults with their feigned cunning (God forbid, hypocrisy).

And one more thing. Why not drawings, but cunts? According to Borys Hrinchenko and the 11-volume Explanatory Dictionary of the Ukrainian language, kunshtyky are drawings, pictures. We read in Taras Shevchenko's poem "Princess":

I bought books with kunshtyks

In Romney.

I entertained, talked

And prayed to God,

And the alphabet on kunshtykah

I went to learn.

So let's revive this beautiful word of the native language!

Yaroslav Benza,

of the Ivanna Blazhkevich Art Prize
