The collection of essays, "montages", as Deborah Vogel called it, arose not only from correspondence (now extinct) with Bruno Schultz, but also from her own, original aesthetic theories. Vogel was fascinated by constructivism in painting and modernism in literature, but deep down she remained a lyricist. She tried to give her texts the features of a newspaper report, a composition composed of individual snapshots, such as those that did not seem to be selected. Her characters, deliberately sketchy and looking like mannequins, walk the streets of a fictional, geometric city that resembles Paris or Lviv.
