The Black Council is the first Ukrainian-language historical novel written and published by Panteleimon Kulish in 1857. In this "chronicle of historical events" the author depicts the so-called Ruin - the day after the death of B. Khmelnytsky, when Ukraine was torn apart by various political and social orientations, which led to the "black council" (because it involved "blacks") 1663 year.
