"Ethnographic groups of Ukrainians in the Carpathians. Hutsuls ”is a scientific and journalistic work prepared by experienced scientists of the world-famous Academic Institute of Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine under the leadership of Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Professor Stepan Pavlyuk. The monograph is devoted to the study of all aspects of Hutsul life. Hutsul customs, legal and ethical norms, beliefs, superstitions, demonology, customs, and rites are complex and extremely valuable material for science. It traces the imprints of the spiritual life of different epochs from the primitive communal system, a combination of ancient pagan and later Christian elements, fantastic irrational ideas with practical experience gained and tested over the centuries. Hutsul folklore is also rich in relic elements, especially ritual songs, fairy tales, legends, orders related to beliefs and superstitions. In the folk poetry of the Hutsuls such song genres as kolomyyka, song-chronicle have acquired special development. The melody of folk singing, instrumental music, traditional dances, original folk art, etc. are marked by unique originality. In the past, the Hutsul region was famous for its rich applied and decorative arts: ceramics, woodcarving, miracle-Easter eggs, artistic weaving, embroidery, artistic processing of metal, leather, horn products. The unique Hutsul clothing with its own ornaments and additions (zgards, cherries, tobivkas, etc.) is marked by its unique color scheme and artistic orientation. The publication will be useful for both scholars and the general public interested in the cultural heritage of the Hutsuls.
