The Great War is the first book in the Galician Saga, which began in 1914. In the Galician village of Peretina, life is slow and even uninteresting. Perhaps the only exception in the middle of the gray everyday life is the confrontation between supporters of the Ukrainian "Enlightenment" and Muscovites, which sometimes escalates into a fight. However, the quiet life ends abruptly on a fine July day in 1914, when the people of Peretin learn of the beginning of the war. From now on, each of them has his own way and destiny. The first concentration camp in Europe, Thalerhof, awaits Muscovites; adult men are drafted into the Austrian army; patriotic youth join the ranks of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen.
