Hugh Lofting (1886-1947) was a British writer and well-known author of a series of works on Dr. Doolittle, who understood and helped animals. The first book, The Story of Dr. Doolittle, His Unusual Life at Home and Extraordinary Adventures in Foreign Countries, was published in 1920 with illustrations by Lofting himself and immediately fell in love with readers, both adults and children. Her popularity was such that the writer continued to write stories about an unusual doctor.
