Ivan Karpenko-Kary (real name - Ivan Karpovych Tobilevych, 1845-1907) - Ukrainian writer and scholar, playwright, whom Ivan Franko called "one of the fathers of modern Ukrainian theater." Karpenko-Kary's artistic talent allowed him to perform with great success in all classical genres. But he reached the highest level in comedy, which was a real creative element of the artist. And although Ivan Karpenko-Kary began writing much later than playing on stage (the first story was published in 1881), he created 18 original plays, which summed up almost a century of development of Ukrainian drama, raising it to a new level. His best dramas and comedies - "Talentless", "Martin Borulya", "Mercenary", "Sava Chaly", "One Hundred Thousand", "Master" - and still do not leave the stage, without losing their value, they were and remain pride of national theatrical culture.
