The phenomenon of the "Ukrainian avant-garde" was first heard in the West in 1973 at the London exhibition "Tatlin's dream". Then, for the first time, world-class works by unknown avant-garde artists of Ukraine Vasyl Yermylov and Oleksandr Bohomazov were exhibited there. This led to the mention of other world-famous masters, by origin, upbringing, self-awareness and national traditions associated with Kiev, Kharkov, Lviv, Odessa. In addition to the above, portraits of David Burliuk's "most faithful son of Ukraine" are being torn down one after another in the book; a Pole who considered himself a Ukrainian, Kazimir Malevich; professor of Kyiv Art Institute and bandura player Volodymyr Tatlin; the founder of the Ukrainian school of constructivist scenography Alexandra Exter; artists of the "Culture League"; phenomenal sculptor Alexander Archipenko.
Complemented by extensive cultural studies and personal memoirs of the author, the book is designed to present the reader with a holistic picture of the origins and formation of the Ukrainian artistic avant-garde.
