The outstanding pianist, choral conductor, and composer Mykola Lysenko (1842-1912) received a brilliant education, graduating from the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Kiev, then defending his Ph.D. in biology, and he was predicted to have a brilliant career as a scientist. But he chose a different path, connecting his life with music. After studying at the Leipzig Conservatory (piano class) Lysenko became a virtuoso pianist. He studied with Rimsky-Korsakov at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, but devoted his entire life to the promotion of Ukrainian music.
