The book tells how humanity throughout the history of its existence has treated and still treats death - from a religious, scientific and philosophical point of view. Ways of forcible death - the traditions of torture and execution that have developed over different eras are also discussed in the book. The author does not talk about mass murders during numerous wars, nor about murders committed out of self-interest and revenge: historical and modern criminal and military chronicles and works of art are filled with stories about this. But everything else is discussed in detail, including the tragedy of genocide and the nature of suicide. The author also reflects on the function of God, which man dared to assume by enforcing the death penalty. The author hopes that with the help of this book at least one human death can be prevented: then his work will not be in vain.
