The fate of the outstanding Ukrainian writer Volodymyr Vynnychenko (1880 - 1951) was extremely difficult and turbulent. This talented artist of the word was a well-known politician who devoted his entire life to the struggle to build a free, independent Ukraine. Therefore, it is not surprising that his works have long been banned from publication. The protagonist of the novel "Notes of Mephistopheles" Yakiv Mykhailyuk does not seem to live, but plays in life. Everything in it is easy and simple. He even treats his love as a game: why not marry a girl he calls White Hat, because she is so beautiful and sweet? But one obstacle stands in the way: it turns out that Mephistopheles of Cypriot has a son born against his will. The game ends: Mikhailyuk has to choose between a lover and a child. And this choice is too serious ...

The book also includes the stories "The Moment" and "Fedko-Khalamidnyk", the story "On the Other Side" and the play "Black Panther and Polar Bear".
